For round brilliants, the laboratory cut grade is a strong starting point. For fancy shapes such as oval, pear, emerald and cushion cuts, compare videos or view the stones in person because outline, bow-tie effect and light performance can vary even when the paperwork looks similar.
Natural vs laboratory-grown diamonds
Natural diamonds formed in the earth; laboratory-grown diamonds are produced by HPHT or CVD processes. Both are diamond, while moissanite and cubic zirconia are different materials used as diamond simulants. Visual inspection alone is not a reliable way to identify origin, so the report and laser inscription matter.
The choice is personal. A natural diamond offers geological rarity and a mature collector market. A laboratory-grown diamond can offer more size or higher colour and clarity for the same initial budget. Do not assume either category guarantees ethical or environmental performance: ask for specific sourcing, energy and chain-of-custody information rather than relying on broad claims. Resale expectations and replacement value should be discussed before purchase.
Diamond shapes and settings
Round brilliant is the reference for sparkle and cut research. Emerald and Asscher cuts emphasise clarity, geometry and broad flashes. Oval, pear and marquise can look elongated on the hand, while cushion and radiant cuts combine softened outlines with lively faceting.
A setting must suit the wearer as well as the stone. Prongs expose more of the diamond; bezels offer greater edge protection; halos alter perceived scale; pavé adds surface light but needs maintenance. Ask how high the ring sits, whether a wedding band will fit beside it, and how future resizing may affect the design.
